This image in parasternal long-axis view illustrates some limitations of the M-mode method of measuring LV dimension and wall thickness in some patients. In the M-mode image on the left, an oblique cut leads to multiple problems. First is incorrect measurement of interventricular septum and possible confounding from right ventricular trabeculations. Furthermore, the posterior wall is difficult to measure due to many trabeculations in the basal part of the ventricle and this leads to possibly incorrect measurement. Also, the LV dimension was slightly larger with M-mode measurement. 2D imaging on the left side can achieve a proper geometric cut and slightly smaller wall thickness measurements. The yellow dotted line on the left image has been added to make the M-mode cut line more clearly visible
